Putin Discusses Energy, Economic Ties With Mongolian Counterpart

Russian state oil giant Rosneft intends to expand its presence in Mongolia, President Vladimir Putin told journalists after holding talks with his Mongolian counterpart, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, in Ulan Bator on September 3.

Elbegdorj said his country proposed that Russia consider building a natural-gas pipeline across the Mongolian steppe to China.

The Mongolian leader added that Moscow and Ulan Bator are discussing the possibility of signing an agreement on transit of gas to China in the nearest future.

According to Elbegdorj, Mongolia also urged Russia to introduce a duty-free regime for Mongolian exports for a 20-year period, saying it would help increase the volume of bilateral trade to $10 billion by 2020.

Rusian and Mongolian officials sagned 15 documents during Putin's visit to Ulan Bator, including agreements on visa-free travel, military equipment supplies, joint efforts on environment protection, and education.
