Univ. president decorated by Mongolia

Oman participated in the 2014 Seoul International Book Fair held at COEX in southern Seoul last week.

It was the first time that the country joined the historic book fair.

Oman was one of 23 countries that sent delegations to the five-day event to showcase their books and cultural products to the Korean public during the annual event hosted by the Korean Publishers' Association.

The other countries included Saudi Arabia, Canada and Germany.

Oman was chosen as the guest of honor country as this year marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Oman.

On Wednesday, Omani Minister of Information Abdul Munim Mansoor Al Hasani hosted a reception at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel in Seoul on the occasion of his government's participation in the book fair.

During the reception, the Oman Royal Orchestra performed.

During the fair, the Embassy of Oman hosted an exhibition of nearly 100 books highlighting the past and the present of the country, a photo exhibition and a showcase of traditional Omani costumes.

Meanwhile, the Italian Cultural Institute organized meetings with renowned Italian writers through which Korean readers discovered diverse genres of Italian literature.

Under the motto of the "Golden Ratio of Culture," the Italian Cultural Institute hosted a variety of programs to raise Koreans' awareness of cultural assets of Italy.

The Italian delegation participated in the book fair as a culture focus on the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy this year.

Publishers and writers from the foreign delegations organized diverse seminars, conferences and diverse exhibitions during the international event.

Beginning in 1947, the historic Seoul International Book Fair is one of the largest gatherings of publishers and writers.

Last year's guest of honor country was India. Twenty-five countries sent delegations to the annual event and 854 booths were on display to meet visitors.

President Park Geun-hye participated in the book fair last year. The event drew nearly 130,000 visitors.
