Mongolians and Utahns Celebrate Mongolian New Year

(KUTV) Dozens of Mongolian natives living in Utah, showed support for their heritage by celebrating the Mongolian New Year Saturday night.

The Intermountain Relocation Center organized the event to welcome families who moved from Mongolia to Utah to work for Rio Tinto.

"They're in training for how do their jobs with Rio Tinto, [then they'll] go back to Mongolia [and] do similar mining jobs in Mongolia," said Thomas Whitaker of the Intermountain Relocation Council.

Organizers say it's not just a welcome gesture to people new to a foreign country, but it also helps locals learn more about Mongolian culture.

Mongolians celebrate the New Year by exchanging gifts, lighting candles and dressing in traditional costumes.
