Goat Plague Outbreak In Inner Mongolia

BEIJING, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has confirmed an outbreak of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) or also known as goat plague in northwest Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Two villages in Bayannur City of Inner Mongolia reported on Feb 10 that 1,063 goats had showed suspected symptoms of the disease with 431 dead, Xinhua news agency reported.

The national exotic animal disease research centre confirmed Monday that the epidemic was caused by PPR.

Local authorities have sealed off and sterilised infected areas, where 5,090 infected goats and goats from the same herds are being culled to prevent the disease from spreading.

PPR is a contagious disease that affects mainly goats and sheep.
