Aung San Suu Kyi honored with Geremek Award

During the 7th Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies, the 2013 Geremek was awarded to Burma`s pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, in Ulaanbaatar on Monday April 29th.

This year, the Community of Democracies’ Selection Committee has chosen to bestow the Geremek Award to Aung San Suu Kyi, for her lifetime struggle to promote democratic values and practices in her region and throughout the world.

The Geremek Award was first issued in 2009. Previous outstanding individuals who were presented with the award include the Belarusian opposition (2011), Cuban priest Jose Conrado Rodriguez (2010), and the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician Nelson Mandela (2009).

The Geremek Foundation initiated the award to be given to a work of outstanding quality that has contributed to the development of democracy after Professor Bronisław Geremek died in 2008.
