President visits reindeer family

The President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj spent the longest night of the year in the tent of reindeer herder family, the minority of the Mongolian nationality.

The President arrived in the reindeer herder’s tribe who are wintering in the Eastern Taiga territory of Tsagaannuur soum, Khuvsgul province on December 22nd. In 1985 the government made resolution to make Tsagaannuur soum, the main living territory of the reindeer people, as the administrational unit. During the president’s visit, the reindeer people said that it was unbelievable that the head of the state is visiting the East Taiga for the first time during the coldest time of the year.

The reindeer people, who live the northernmost part of Mongolia in unique culture and living environment, are the Mongolian ethnic group with smallest population. Currently, over 600 reindeer people of around 130 families in Tsagaannuur soum, Khuvsgul province. The President said that he will work paying special attention to tackling issues that reindeer people face.

The climate temperature reaches minus 48 Celsius in Darkhadyn Khotgor, mountain valley area, which is located 1000 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar and 300 kilometers from Khuvsgul province center. But for the reindeer people, who live in harsh climate condition breeding reindeers, it is not that shocking cold.
The reindeer people delivered many issues to the President such as; preserving the national culture and tradition, implement the rights to obtain the education in the native language, improve the health service and provide young people with employment. The head count of reindeer stock has increased to 1500 from 400.
