FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WEF AND WTO LEADERS

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ In Switzerland with the working visit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs G.Zandanshatar met on Monday with Klaus Schwab, the chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Geneva.


The Minister spoke about political and economic situation in Mongolia and noted that the collaboration between Mongolia and the WEF have been widening in the mining sector, anti-corruption initiatives, environment and water issues.

In response, Mr. Schwab mentioned about an importance of the infrastructure development for Mongolia, especially of open direct flights to the biggest cities of the world. He promised to seek an opportunity to organize an international discussion on proper exploitation of mineral resources and mining development, and hoped that Mongolian delegates will participate in the World Economic Forum on East and Central Asia matters.

The Foreign Minister G.Zandanshatar invited Mr. Schwab to visit Mongolia.

After this meeting, the Foreign Minister met Mr. Pascal Lamy, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Noting that the 15th anniversary of Mongolia's joining the WTO is marked this year, the Minister spoke about Mongolia's policy on external trade, intensive development of economics, as well as about some obstacles Mongolia faces in enrolling the international economic integration. He emphasized an importance of the multilateral trade system based on the international trade law and rules for those countries developing free trade, especially for Mongolia that is located between the two big nations. Then he invited Mr. Lamy to visit Mongolia.

In response, Mr. Lamy expressed a hope that the free and open trade policy will contribute to the economic growth of Mongolia. He reported that the WTO will analyze the trade policy of Mongolia, "it will a step determining an external trade environment and difficulties, and finding solutions".

Mr. Lamy said the WTO will render technical aid and support to Mongolia for facilitating trade within the Aid for Trade Programme.

The same day, G.Zandanshatar gave an interview to the Vision Plus agency. He talked about the foreign policy of Mongolia, participation of Mongolia in the UN peacekeeping operations, economic development, the biggest projects on economics, infrastructure and mining, and an economic partnership agreement.
