President meets with UN Secretary General

While attending the fourth annual forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in Doha, President Ts.Elbegdorj met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday.


The two officials acknowledged the 50th anniversary of Mongolia’s membership in the United Nations.

They discussed moving forward on a joint agreement between Mongolia and the UN to open a research center in Ulaanbaatar for landlocked developing nations.

Ts.Elbegdorj said Mongolia has made suggestions to support democratic education and fight corruption in its role as the chair of the Community of Democracies. He requested support for implementing those suggestions.

The president also asked for an increase in the number of Mongolians working at the UN. Ban Ki-moon said he would look into the issue, noting that Mongolians are highly educated and well suited to the work.

Ban Ki-moon thanked the president for his efforts to strengthen democratic education. He also stated his support for Mongolia’s suggestions on the issue of climate change.

The two men also talked about widening cooperation in UN peacekeeping activities.
