PRESIDENT AT ANTI-DESERTIFICATION MEETING

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ On Tuesday, the State Head Ts.Elbegdorj attended a high-level meeting themed “Addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication”. It was held in frames of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly. At the meeting, the session's president Mr Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser spoke about the desertification. It has become the most worrying problem that has many consequences not only in ecological sphere, but also in economics, politics and social fields, especially it hits the poor, he said, adding that in the years to come it will more difficult for those countries who depend on agricultural sector. After this, Ts.Elbegdorj gave a speech at a round-table meeting held under the same topic. He underlined that the global warming is affecting Mongolia, leaving it with 70 per cent lands degraded. It is time to intensify an effectiveness of worldwide talks on desertification, he said and proposed to conduct a joint research in Mongolian Gobi "because it is the most suitable place to study desertification and droughts", to co-implement a project on preserving flora and fauna in Gobi, and to combat the desertification. These suggestions have been appreciated by leaders of African countries. Then the Presidents of Nigeria and Namibia met with Ts.Elbegdorj to share views on activities against global climate change and desertification.
