Emergency Commission discusses power outages, harvest
The State Emergency Commission held a meeting on Friday to discuss the continuing power problems in the northern part of the country and the harvest. Heavy snowfall on September 28 and 29 caused at least 23 utility poles to collapse in Darkhan-Uul and Selenge provinces, causing widespread power outages affecting numerous communities and businesses.
Currently all or parts of the following areas are still without power: Saikhan; Eruu; Khuder; Orkhon; Orkhontuul; Tsagaantolgoi soum in Selenge aimag; Darkhan; and Khongor soum.
A working group appointed by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy is in the field to making repairs, and it is hoped that all power will be restored by Saturday. The Government plans to spend MNT 876 million to rebuild the power supply in the region.
The Emergency Commission also received an update on the harvest from J.Saule, the vice minister for Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, who said the wheat harvest is 77.1 percent complete, potatoes 92.8 percent, and vegetables 95.5 percent.
Nationwide 346,500 tons of wheat have been harvested, 178,800 tons of potatoes, 89,900 tons of vegetables, and 25,800 tons of forage. Remaining to be harvested are 68,200 hectares of wheat and 3,000 hectares of vegetables. The wheat harvest should be completed in six days, potatoes in four, and vegetables in two.
Deputy Minister M.Enkhbold requested that officials take care of the harvested wheat to ensure its good quality, and report about transportation issues concerning the wheat.
