Rio Tinto Sponsors Mongolian Olympic Team For 2012 Games

MELBOURNE -(Dow Jones)- Mining giant Rio Tinto PLC (RIO), which is supplying all the metal that will be used to produce medals for the 2012 Olympics, said Tuesday it has signed a deal to sponsor the Mongolian national team at the London games.

Metal for the 4,700 gold, silver and bronze medals is coming from Rio Tinto's Kennecott Utah Copper operation in the U.S. and the Oyu Tolgoi mine being developed in Mongolia's South Gobi Desert.

"Rio Tinto wants to play its part in giving Mongolia's medal winning athletes the best possible chance to succeed at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London next year," said David Paterson, Rio Tinto country director for Mongolia.

The Anglo-Australian company also is a partner-level sponsor of the Australian Olympic team. The value of the sponsorship deals wasn't disclosed.
