Macmahon confirms Mongolian contract

ENGINEERING contractor Macmahon Holdings today confirmed it has won a major contract in Mongolia.

Earlier this month the company denied having won the contract, which is a joint venture with German BBM Operta Group, for the mining operations at the state-owned Tavan Tolgoi Coal Mine in Mongolia.

In a statement today, the company said the contract included large scale open cut mining operations in South Gobi region of Mongolia. The terms and value of the deal were not disclosed.

Macmahon chief executive Nick Bowen said the win advanced the company’s efforts to secure more work in the coal mining sector in Mongolia.

"The progression of the Tavan Tolgoi project now provides a solid foundation for Macmahon, in its efforts to establish a long-term business in one of the world's largest emerging mining regions," Mr Bowen said.

The mine is expected to produce up to 15 million tonnes of coal per annum once all work is complete.

Work is expected to start in the first quarter of next year.
