E.Munkh-Ochir: The coalition has served its purpose and should resign
MP E.Munkh-Ochir answers our reporter’s questions on why he demanded at yesterday’s meeting of the DP group in Parliament that the Government should resign.
Why do you think the Government should resign?
With the two major parties sharing power, there is no effective monitoring and criticism of the Government in Parliament. Let the MPP rule and let us be a responsible opposition. These are my feelings.
Do MPP members support your suggestion?
You can ask them. The atmosphere in Parliament is very strange now, with MPs making deals with one another all the time on appointment of officials, on which draft laws will be supported, and such things, instead of working to meet the needs of people. It’s all quid pro quo now under the coalition Government, with no thought of what the country needs.
Can you give a definite example?
For example, insurance funds should not be under the minister’s control. They are not being properly spent but there is no concern in Parliament. I prepared a draft law on explosive substances and their improved monitoring. I also wanted new provisions on use of fire-arms. All my suggestions were rejected. Surprisingly, issues relating to money are promptly approved.
What steps should be taken to get the Government to resign?
I expressed my personal views and I do not want to organize anything. I supported the idea of a coalition as that would expedite decisions on large mineral deposits. That has been achieved and now we need adequate monitoring of projects. For this we need an alert opposition. I feel the DP has served the nation well by joining the coalition when it was necessary, but now it is time to get out, again in the nation’s and the people’s interest, so that we can act as a watchdog.
