Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia met with Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Filipe Marques Amado on Wednesday and they discussed bilateral relations.
The president welcomed Amado, the first high-level official from Portugal to visit Mongolia since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1974. He hoped the two countries would further improve relations and promote cooperation.
Amado said he is happy to see Mongolia successfully transforming into a democratic society, and appreciates the president's decision to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty early this year.
In January 2009, the two countries approved a draft contract in Lisbon on developing cooperation in education, culture, science and technology, youth, sports and media.
